Frequently Asked Questions

What is MediShield Life?

MediShield Life is a basic health insurance scheme that covers all Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents for life. It helps pay for large hospital bills and selected outpatient treatments, such as dialysis and chemotherapy. Unlike the old MediShield, it has no lifetime claim limit and covers pre-existing conditions.

How are MediShield Life premiums paid?

MediShield Life premiums are paid from your Medisave Account (MA). If your MA balance is insufficient, you can use the MA of immediate family members (spouse, parents, children, siblings) to top up. Cash payment is generally not required unless you choose to pay by cash.

Does MediShield Life cover everything?

No. MediShield Life covers subsidised ward stays (B2/C class) in public hospitals and selected outpatient treatments. It does not cover private hospital stays, A/B1 class wards (unless you pay the difference), cosmetic surgery, or dental treatment (except for surgery). For broader coverage, many Singaporeans purchase Integrated Shield Plans (IPs) from private insurers.

Can I opt out of MediShield Life?

No. MediShield Life is compulsory for all Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents. There is no opt-out option. This ensures everyone has basic health insurance coverage for life, regardless of health status.

What are the premium subsidies available?

The government provides premium subsidies for lower- to middle-income households. Additional premium subsidies are available for Pioneer Generation and Merdeka Generation seniors. The amount of subsidy depends on your household income and property value. Check the CPF Board website for the latest subsidy details.
